Wrap – Up for Day 2 on the set of Nandito Ako

MANILA, Philippines – For an internationally acclaimed singer, David Archuleta had to deal with “nerves” in hurdling his first shooting day as a television actor. The former American Idol sensation, however, said he was pleased with the outcome of the first shooting day, and said he was having a grand time with his co-stars– TV5 princesses Jasmin Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero–in the upcoming mini-serye “Nandito Ako.”
Asked to rate his acting experience, David said, “it would be something I would love to work on more because it would be something that I’d like to do. I wanna get better at it.”
He also enjoyed recording the old OPM song, “Nandito Ako,” used as the theme song of the series that bears its title.
Not surprisingly, David said of his recording of the Tagalog song, “it wasn’t as challenging as I thought it would be,” and humored interviewers with a “sample” by singing the opening line of the song.
In the mini-serye, David plays the role of Josh, a Filipino-American born and raised in the Philippines and later sent to the US. At the tender age of five, he is separated from his mother during a big fire in their neighborhood. After many years, he returns to the Philippines as an accomplished international pop star in search of his long-lost mother.
David says he can relate to his Fil-Am character in real life. “Whatever personality trait that might be, I feel like I have that too,” he said.
In the series, David unwittingly comes between two best friends, played by Jasmin (as Hanya) and Eula (as Holly). He declines to explain what happens, but prods the public to just watch the TV5 series.
In real life, the screen love triangle is getting along well, says David. “We feel like we can all relate to each other; they might have more experience than I do but they still have that, umm, those nerves,” he quipped.
The series is being shot in Manila and Batangas, helmed by the newest figure in the Kapatid network, veteran director Mac Alejandre. The mini-serye is due to unreel on February 20.
Meanwhile, David and TV5 are being talked about in US media like the Washington Post, USA Today, americanidol.net, the Perez Hilton gossip site, among others. For the latest updates on David, log-on to followarchuleta.ph

Pinoy at heart
It was such a thrill to meet David Archuleta of “American Idol” fame. I visited the set of “Nandito Ako,” his dramaserye with TV5, on its first taping day. As soon as we were introduced, he hummed “Hello Dolly” and said it’s one of his favorite songs.
I got to listen to his version of “Nandito Ako.” I was pleasantly surprised that he sang it in almost perfect Pinoy diction. He is also set to record its English version, “Forever With You” (as translated by the song’s composer, Aaron Paul).
He’s a fan of Regine Velasquez, so there are plans for him to meet her and Ogie Alcasid as well. I’m sure Ogie will like David’s version of his hit song, “Nandito Ako.”
Direk Mac Alejandre said David is such a delight to work with. “He knows what’s expected of him. And he’s a perfectionist. Siya mismo ang gustong umulit ng eksena if he feels he can do more. If only he could stay here longer, it would be great to do a movie with him. For a first-time actor, he’s a natural.”
The Archuleta fever has spread across Asia. Fans from neighboring countries are even flying in to watch his tapings. David’s fans from all over Asia will be included in the concert scene of his teleserye (Visit followarchuleta.ph and follow HIDDEN EMAIL .).
He took time out from his hectic schedule to attend a Mormon service last Sunday. After his three-week stay here, he is off to Singapore, before going on a two-year hiatus to fulfill his religious mission.
While shooting, David is not comfy when there are too many people around because it distracts him. There were five bodyguards assigned to keep an eye on him, but he requested to trim it down to three.
He is allowed to work only for 12 hours a day, and he has to rest for the next 12 hours before he resumes work (in compliance with the rules of the Actors Guild, of which he is a member).
Be that as it may, David is surely turning into a Goliath in the hearts of Pinoys.

David Archuleta puts showbiz hiatus on hold to do TV5 miniseries
david archuletaTHE American Idol Season 7 runner-up is back in the country for the fourth time—and as a Kapatid this time.
Arguably one of the most popular products of the premier singing competition on US TV, David Archuleta is well-loved by Pinoys with enough followers to form several fan clubs that are major players in the most popular social-networking sites—a fact that has not been lost on him. That is why he has the most number of trips here in the country as far as AI winners and runners-up are concerned, save for those with Filipino bloods like Jasmine Trias and Thia Megia.
The 21-year-old native of Utah first visited the Philippines in 2009 for a back-to-back concert with fellow “David” and AI7 winner David Cook. In 2010, he returned to the country to promote his third album The Other Side of Love and late last year, he was back the third time around for a solo concert. For his fourth trip, Archuleta signed up with TV5 to do a miniseries together with the two princesses of the network: Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero. Tentatively titled Nandito Ako, it will also star actresses Aiko Melendez, Gelli de Belen and G Toengi, who is also returning to the country after several years of US residency. Archuleta is scheduled to stay in the country for three weeks. Though it was published that he has just announced a two-year hiatus from his showbiz career to fulfill his duties for his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Archuleta confirmed he rescheduled his leave after finishing his three-week stint in the country for the miniseries.
In a special one-on-one interview granted by Archuleta courtesy of TV5, we researched several questions from his fans in Twitter for David to answer.
You never acted even in the States, why accept this TV5 offer?
Well, to be honest, I am never comfortable in being an actor so I never pursued this but I like TV5’s offer. The character I will be playing, his name is Josh, is very similar to me. I can easily relate to the character and it’s quite close to my heart, so I accepted.
But why try Philippine showbiz first?
You see, every time I come to the Philippines, I feel the warmth of the people and how they accept me here, so I think it would be easier for me to try acting here. I will play a character with a Filipina mother, so a mixed race. I’m mixed myself as I have Latin blood.
Which came first, your decision to take a showbiz hiatus or the offer of TV5?
I had already announced my two-year vacation and then TV5’s offer came. It fits my schedule and it will work around my plans, so I accepted it.
Did you need to ask any permission from your church before you accepted this, as you had already announced your hiatus?
No permission was needed. I just told them that I will finish this first and then I will take my break.
Have you seen the musical play Book of Mormons in Broadway?
No, I haven’t. Have you? (We answered yes adding that it was outrageous, and he giggled, a trademark that endeared him to his million of followers). Well, they said it was fun but, no, I haven’t seen it.

Will you be actively supporting US presidential candidate Mitt Romney who is a fellow Mormon like you?

Well, because of my schedule, I have only been reading what was written in the papers. I find Mitt very respectable and his views are sensible so I would love to meet him personally. If he ask for my support, why not?

Other than Charice Pempengco who is a friend of yours, do you know any other Filipino singers?

Ever since I started singing and even before I joined AI, I always have a huge admiration for Regine Velasquez. I’ve seen her perform but then she’s working for another network here so….

Last question: does David cook?

Yeah.
